The Practice of Presence is a simple book to help those who are not familiar with the different types of contemplative prayer learn more about these different methods. Each type of prayer is explained and then steps are given to enable the practitioner to put them into practice. There are a wide range of different types of contemplative prayer offered including: Centering prayer, Lectio Divina, Welcome prayer, Ignatian prayer, Taize prayer, Daily Examen, and theJesus prayer.

Brother Lawrence: Practising the Presence of God

Brother Lawrence is famed for this classic book on prayer. Through written conversations and letters Brother Lawrence (a 17th Century monk) described a way of living through prayer that has instructed and inspired Christians through the centuries. The first part also includes key point summaries, and reflections on each section. This version also includes in the second part the additional Spiritual Maxims, a more detailed explanation of prayer that was written later by Brother Lawrence and which adds to what is described in the conversations and letters.

How to Pray

'How to Pray' was written by the 19th century evangelist R. A. Torrey and is a classic work on prayer. Though written at the turn of the 20th century, this book is as relevant today as it was then. Torrey writes with honesty and with clarity on how we should prayer. He covers topics such as: how to pray; obeying and praying; praying in the Spirit; and praying with thanksgiving. Torrey also goes into detail about the hindrances to prayer and how we can overcome these to pray more powerfully. If we were to take the advice offered in this simple book on prayer, then our prayer lives would surely be transformed.
